Grammy-winning hard rock band Halestorm chose Skyway Studios for their new “Darkness Always Wins” music video – and for good reason. Renowned for our cutting-edge production capabilities, Skyway provided the perfect creative playground for the band’s vision. Our immersive LED volume stage (Studio D), sprawling production spaces, and top-tier amenities are tailor-made for high-end music video production. Halestorm had experienced this firsthand during their previous visit in 2022, when they shot the performance video for “The Steeple”. The band’s trust in our facility speaks volumes. Both “The Steeple” and “Darkness Always Wins” showcase Skyway’s unique flexibility: whether filming on a virtual LED backdrop or in a traditional soundstage setup, our studio adapts to any creative concept.
Halestorm’s new song “Darkness Always Wins” isn’t just another headbanger – it’s a moody, cinematic anthem that demanded an equally cinematic visual treatment. (The track is the lead single off their upcoming sixth album Everest, due August 8, 2025.) From the start, lead singer Lzzy Hale and director DJay Brawner had a bold concept in mind, filled with dark fantasy imagery and high drama. Skyway’s advanced production tech became the engine of that vision, enabling the team to create an otherworldly music video that feels like a short film.
Originally, Halestorm planned to shoot on a scenic Nashville hillside for an authentic outdoor backdrop – but Mother Nature had other plans. A streak of unpredictable summer storms threatened the outdoor shoot, so the production pivoted to our indoor LED stage at the last minute. Studio D’s LED volume came to the rescue, allowing the crew to recreate a sprawling landscape digitally without worrying about weather. The result was stunning: with the LED projecting hyper-realistic vistas, Halestorm could perform in a controlled “outdoor” environment that looked just as epic on camera as any real location. The band and director have hinted that the LED stage solution may have surpassed the original plan – proving how virtual production technology can turn potential setbacks into creative triumphs.
On set, Halestorm’s performance was nothing short of theatrical. The video itself plays out like a mini action movie. Lzzy Hale appears chainmailed-up, wielding a huge medieval sword as a warrior in a desolate realm. Thanks to Skyway’s LED stage, Lzzy is seen wandering through a brooding, apocalyptic landscape – think misty swamps and eerie ruins – where she duels a mud-covered foe amidst lightning and smoke. Meanwhile, the rest of the band performs on the boggy, foggy battlefield beside her, with thunderous drums and solos matching the intensity of the clash. All of this dramatic scenery was generated in real time on our curved LED, wrapping the band in a digital world that blends seamlessly with practical on-set elements. The ability to place Halestorm in a cinematic fantasy setting – without leaving the studio – showcases the magic of our virtual production stage.
This high-tech wizardry didn’t replace everything – the video’s impact also comes from tactile, real-world details. The production team combined the LED visuals with practical effects on set to make the fantasy feel tangible. Atmospheric fog, dramatic lighting, and even real mud and rain elements were employed to ensure Lzzy’s battle felt gritty and real. Skyway’s expansive stage let the crew set up elaborate camera rigs to capture sweeping hero shots of the band and intense close-ups of the swordfight. The LED backdrop provided interactive light (flashes of lightning, glowing embers, etc.) that reflected off the performers in-camera, enhancing realism. In other words, our studio became an all-in-one sandbox where digital and practical effects merged into one grand vision.
Want to see how it all came together? Halestorm has released an official behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Darkness Always Wins.” In the BTS video, you’ll see the band and crew hard at work on Skyway’s LED Stage in Studio D – setting up the otherworldly backdrop and crafting the song’s ominous atmosphere. The crew rigs up towering lights and sky panels to get that perfect moody glow, while haze machines pump out fog that swirls under the neon sky. Elaborate camera setups are on display, including a jib swooping over the “battlefield” to capture dynamic movement. You’ll also spot practical props in play: Lzzy’s massive sword and the adversary’s armor, plus plenty of mud, water, and wind effects to immerse the band in this dark fantasy world. Everyone on set – from directors to cinematographers to the band members themselves – worked in sync to balance technology and artistry, making the video’s cinematic feel possible.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
